National Safety Council Uncovers “The Great Multitasking Lie” Amidst April Distracted Driving Awareness Month

DistractedD_

April was Distracted Driver Awareness Month in Ventura and across the United States. During the month of April, officials, organizations, and concerned citizens got together throughout the state, and the nation, to tell drivers to put down their phones and focus on the road while operating a motor vehicle. One of the pushes to get drivers to stop using their cell phones while driving came from the National Safety Council, “a mission-based organization focused on eliminating the leading causes of preventable death and injury.” The National Safety Council recently released information about the dangers of attempting to multitask while driving. To help Ventura residents and drivers stay safe while on the road, we share some of that information here.

Think Twice Before Multitasking While Driving in Ventura

According to the National Safety Council, the idea that we can multitask while driving is a dangerous myth that can lead to serious injuries and even death from distracted driving accidents. First, the National Safety Council states that, “[y]our brain can’t process two things at once. It switches attention from one thing to another.” This means that even if we think we are doing two things at once, such as texting and driving, we are not really processing one of those activities. Second, the National Safety Council mentions that using a cell phone while driving is “[d]angerous even when sitting at red lights or stop signs because it takes your brain some time to return its focus to the road.” Third, as surprising as it may seem, the National Safety Council reveals that your voice-to-text practice may not be as safe as you think. The Council notes that, “[v]oice-to-text is not safer – it may distract you longer than texting.” Finally, the National Safety Council reminds all drivers that “[n]othing is more important than getting to your destination safely. Use your phone and other technology only when you are safely parked.”

Your Rights if You are Injured by a Distracted Driver in Ventura

Considering the recent spike in awareness efforts to keep distracted drivers off of the road, it is important to also raise awareness about the rights of those Ventura residents who have been seriously injured by a distracted driver. When a person is injured due to the negligent and distracted driving of another person in Ventura, they may be entitled to money compensation for their injuries and losses. They can file a lawsuit in court to recover compensation for their injuries under California personal injury laws. However, there is a limited time to file a claim for compensation under California personal injury laws, so it is always best to speak with a lawyer about your case as soon as possible after a serious accident occurs.
