LAPD Sergeant’s Death After Being Hit by Car Demonstrates Dangers of Pedestrian Roadside Accidents – Rights and Options of Pedestrian Accident Victims in Ventura Explained

Pedest2

The death of a revered LAPD Sergeant due to being hit by a car as he stood roadside on the highway highlights the dangers that pedestrians and others face on California roads and is a stark reminder that Ventura pedestrian accident victims and their families have rights and options to get justice under California personal injury laws. According to local news reports, on Monday, June 23, 53-year-old Sergeant Shiou Deng was killed in a car collision that took place on the side of the freeway near Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Reports indicate that Sergeant Deng was stopped at the scene of a collision that had happened earlier, and he was killed after he was struck by a passing vehicle on the highway. He was reported to have “just arrived and exited his vehicle to help when he, himself, was hit and fatally injured.” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said, “Sergeant Deng served the City of Los Angeles with honor, courage, and compassion for more than 26 years…He was a deeply respected leader within our department and a trusted protector of our communities. His loss is immeasurable, and the grief we feel is shared not only by the men and women of the LAPD, but by the entire law enforcement family and the residents he served so faithfully.” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said of the tragic accident, “[t]his is a sad day for our city… The men and women of LAPD put their lives on the line for Angelenos each and every day…This morning, I met with officers at the hospital who described him as caring and selfless. His last act was one of service — putting the safety and wellbeing of others above all else.” Finally, Governor Gavin Newsom stated, “Jennifer and I are heartbroken by the loss of Sergeant Deng, who dedicated more than 26 years to serving the Los Angeles community with pride and purpose…We join his family, friends, and fellow officers in mourning, and in honoring his memory. May his service never be forgotten.” There were no further details regarding the nature of the car accident that took Sergeant Deng’s life, and the investigation is ongoing.

Getting Justice Under California Laws After a Serious Pedestrian Accident Occurs

There is no question that if a decorated LAPD Sergeant can be hit and killed by a car while he is standing on the side of the road, any person is at risk of being involved in a serious and even fatal pedestrian accident in Ventura. As such, it is important for Ventura residents and their family members to understand their rights under California personal injury laws. Under California personal injury laws, victims of serious pedestrian accidents and car accidents may be entitled to compensation for their injuries and losses.
