However, under the ruling, which went into effect in June, California drivers are still permitted to mount a cell phone onto their dashboard or windshield when using GPS navigation and may still use voice commands or Bluetooth technology to operate their phones with a “single tap or slide when it’s mounted.”
In addition to the new distracted driving laws that became effective in June, on July 1, California laws were amended so that “courts in the state may order a person’s driver’s license to be suspended for 90 days to six months ‘for exhibition of speed, or aiding and abetting an exhibition of speed, if the violation occurred as part of a sideshow.’” Lawmakers, community members, and individuals alike are hopeful that these news laws will make for safer and less distracted drivers in California.
