Los Angeles Seeks to Up its Game When it Comes to Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian

There is no doubt that pedestrian safety is a hot topic these days in Los Angeles and throughout California. In recent months, a number of pedestrian-involved fatal car accidents have raised the issue of pedestrian safety on the streets of Los Angeles and pressed lawmakers to strategize solutions to keep those who travel our sidewalks and streets safe from dangerous car accidents. One such lawmaker, Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman, has been on the frontlines of pressing the issue of pedestrian safety. In late October 2023, Councilmember Raman introduced a motion to upgrade Los Angeles’ traffic signals where most needed to decrease the number of pedestrian-involved motor vehicle accidents.

According to a press release from Councilmember Raman’s website, just in 2023 alone, a total of 134 pedestrians were killed in fatal accidents in Los Angeles, and another 427 pedestrians were injured as a result of being involved in car accidents in the City. In support of her proposal to enhance pedestrian safety in Los Angeles by upgrading traffic signals, Councilmember Raman stated, “[w]e have seen an alarming increase in pedestrian fatalities not just across the city, but across the country, with over 7,500 pedestrians estimated to have been killed by traffic violence in 2022 – the highest number since 1981…These numbers are nothing short of an epidemic, and it is critical that we employ whatever measures we can to prioritize pedestrian safety. Walking in Los Angeles should not have to come with a safety warning.” Backing Councilmember Raman, City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield echoed her remarks, adding, “[o]ur streets should be designed for the safety and convenience of all Angelenos, no matter how they travel around the city…Small changes to traffic signal operations can yield huge safety benefits, especially for those who are walking.”
